Introduction

This mathematics-based webquest engages students in calculating their risk of STI infection by using Canadian and local health statistics.

This webquest, suitable for junior high school students, can be completed by individual students.

Resources

Students will need prior knowledge or be taught how to produce bar or line graphs for this webquest.

Task and Process

The assigned readings contain facts that students will likely be familiar with through previous health education classes. What is new in this webquest is the use of statistics and calculation of the potential (based on averages) number of students in their school who have an STI.

Assessment Criteria and Process

Review the evolution criteria for this webquest with the students to determine if they need to be adapted.

Conclusions and Extension

Be sure to note that confidential access to treatment, testing and counseling services is available within their community. Point out the 800 telephone number for the Kids Help Phone.
