  The Elements of a CSH
       Approach

School-based or school-linked health promotion is increasingly recognized as an effective way to coordinate efforts that promote health, prevent disease or other problems, assist children, youth or adults experiencing poor health or to refer people to treatment services.

Many national, provincial/territorial and local definitions of the term have evolved. In Canada, over 25 national organizations defined the term "comprehensive school health" in a consensus statement. In Europe and other countries, the term "health promoting schools" is used. In the United States, the approach is called "coordinated school health". Read more about this world-wide movement.

The definitions include descriptions of the essential elements of a comprehensive approach. There is extensive research available on school health promotion, much of which is captured in our section on background information.
