This page provides links to several documents and websites that report on or describe research on the effect of parent involvement in schools.

There is considerable evidence suggesting that informing, involving, supporting and empowering individual parents to become more engaged in their children's schooling, health and development will lead to improved academic achievement, health and socialization. However, more research on such individual parent involvement is still needed on the types of programs, activities and strategies.

The research on collective parent involvement through parent councils and volunteer programs is much less clear. While such representative and volunteer structures are likely to help school personnel to be more responsive to some parental concerns, there is a need for research showing that parent councils are representative of all parents, that hey have a sustained and positive impact on school policies/programs leading to enhanced academic success or improvements in health or social development.
