About Us

Welcome

This gateway website provides access to many resources in school health promotion as well as being home for the Canadian School Health Centre and the Canadian School Health NGO Network. There is also reference to the School Health Research Network as another part of the school health promotion community in Canada. These organizations, as well as many others initiatives are linked in an effort to create the Canadian School Health Knowledge Network.

This site contains vast links-based libraries on school-based health promotion with connections to the worldwide
Comprehensive School Health/Health Promoting Schools movement. Extensive background information, explanation of the essential elements of comprehensive school health (CSH) approach are provided as well as tools such as lesson plans, webquests, sample policies, evaluation tools and practical advice.

This movement to promote health, academic achievement and social development through coordinated school-based
and school-linked programs has been gaining recognition around the world. In Canada, over 25 national organiza-
tions have recently revised a consensus statement on Comprehensive School Health that was originally published
in 1990. For more on the background and research on school health promotion, as well as links to SH sites around
the world, see the section of
Applying CSH.

Extensive collections of links to research, planning, assessment and other resource documents have been created.
See
Overview of CSH.

Explanations and listed resources relating to various elements of CSH, including policies, education (instruction),
health services, social support and physical environments are provided.

An extensive number of links to resources have been organized into sections that apply a CSH approach to several
health issues including: safety/crime/violence, drugs and alcohol, tobacco, health eating, physical activity,
chronic disease/diabetes, environmental health, injury prevention, HIV/sexuality, racism/discrimination.
See
Applying CSH.

Several strategies used within a comprehensive approach to school health promotion, including youth engagement,
parental involvement, interagency cooperation are covered. See
Applying CSH.

A collections of lesson plans on several topics has been categorized. See
Lesson Plans. There are also several
published
Student Webquests (project that combine online and real life activities into active learning) as well as
links provided to webquests on other sites.
