Introduction
This
webquest will help you to persuade your classmates
to improve their eating habits.
Task
Start by conducting research
on healthy eating habits and recommended daily food intake. Then
conduct a study of the eating habits of your class and compare the
results to
local/provincial/territorial/national and international studies.
Complete the webquest by making a class presentation on your
findings.
Process
Don't forget to take
notes on your webquest actitivities in your
Personal Health Journal.
-
Learn the basics
about healthy eating by reading the following sections of
Canada Food Guide on the Health Canada Site:
Go to
Using the Food Guide and go to:
·
Ways to Use Food Guide
· A
Healthy Eating Checklist
· What
Does the Food Guide Tell You
· How
Many Servings from Each Food Group Do I Need?
· Your
Healthy Eating Score Card
Order the Food Guide from Health Canada
for your family. You will be using the Food Guide to help you
analyze your class nutrition profile.
Prepare a short
report on these assigned readings using Section 3.1 of your
Personal Health Journal. You will need to submit this report as part of this webquest.
-
Next, you will
examine the eating habits of your class. For this task, you will
print the
Health Canada Healthy Eating Scorecard and use it as a survey with your class.
Be sure to protect the confidentiality of their responses to this
survey. Some people may be sensitive about what they eat.
Make sufficient copies of the Health Canada
Healthy Eating Scorecard
for one week for each of your classmates. (Ask them to take two
minutes before the start of each health class to report on what they
ate the day before. Calculate your daily average
servings from each food group. Ask your classmates to do the same
thing. Compare your results.
Compile and compute an average consumption pattern for the students
in your class. Compare your class results to an international study
(Health Behaviours of School Aged Children) in a question on their
dietary habits.
-
On the final day
of your class tracking their eating habits using the Score Card, you
will also ask them to complete a
Nutrition Challenge Quiz as well.
First, take the test individually and see how you do. Then, print
all of the questions from
Nutrition Challenge Quiz (use landscape format in your printer),
make copies and have all students answer the quiz. Calculate the
average scores for the class.
Review your results with the class results to see if there
are any gaps in your knowledge about nutrition.
-
Using the
results of the Score cards and the Quiz, the initial assigned
readings and the other sources listed below, prepare a class
presentation to your class on healthy eating. You can read other
sources as well and you can decide how you want to approach the
topic.
These selected sources are taken from the
Healthy Eating
section of the

Network

Before you prepare your class presentation, review the
Evaluation

which criteria will apply to this webquest.
-
Prepare a brief
summary and commentary on your experience in analyzing your
classmates’ food consumption patterns and assigned readings about
eating habits. Use the
Evaluation
Criteria for Writing Summaries & Commentaries on Webquests
to guide your writing of that part of this webquest.
See section 4.1 of your
Personal Health Journal for some tips on how to create and maintain a personal
health plan. Know where to
find a dietitian if you would like special help in planning your
family meals or if a member of your family has a specific
eating-related problem.
-

How Your Work will be Evaluated
You will be assessed on how well
you have read and understood the assigned readings on this webquest,
using section 3.1 of your
Personal Health Journal.
The
Evaluation
Criteria for Class Presentation will be used
to assess how well you have conducted your class surveys and how
well you have connected those surveys to the assigned readings for
this webquest.
If you have worked in a group on this webquest, complete the
evaluation form containing the
Evaluation Criteria for Group Working Together criteria for assessing your
group’s performance on how well you worked together on this
webquest.
