Welcome. This gateway is designed to help teachers and other educators locate lesson plans and classroom-based learning activities to prevent the harmful use of alcohol and drugs. Many lessons and learning activities from credible sources have been identified. They are screened for their general educational value and commercialism only. You still need to check with your provincial/territorial guidelines, school district policies and use your own professional judgment on whether these lessons and activities are appropriate for your students. The Canadian Association of Principals thanks Health Canada's Drug Strategy for their support in developing this collection of lesson plans.

To use this site effectively, we recommend that you :

  1. Review the recommended or required provincial/territorial learning outcomes so that you know what you have to cover in your program. (See left-hand margin.)

  2. Read the Substance Abuse Among Young People supplied here or go to the linked sites that have been identified, in particular, we recommend reading Health Canada's Prevention Principles.

  3. Review the topics and learning outcomes that are found in the table. These outcomes and learning have been identified from a variety of credible sources. However, they are not intended to be the final world. You will also have to select or follow the outcomes that are the most appropriate or your students.

  4. Select the lesson plans or learning activities for your students by visiting and reading each lesson plan in the table. For your convenience, we will also list at a later date, published programs and learning resources that are not on the web but which can be purchased from other sources.

  5. See the student webquests on Alcohol and Drugs.

Please contact us with comments on lesson/learning activities or if you would like to suggest other lesson plans. dmccall@schoolfile.com.

See table below to find hundreds of lesson plans, online learning activities and learning resources.
